Saab Ursus

Spotted on the Facebook wall of Saab Cars:

The creator, Gijs Scheepens, writes the following:

"What about this? I drawed it yesterday.
A Saab Ursus :)"

Maybe Gijs saw my comment on Inside Saab on Thursday under Swade's blog post about what to call the Saab 9-3 replacement. My idea was to leave the numbers behind and instead use alpha names. Ideally I would like it to be Swedish names, but as Swedish often use strange letters like ä, ö and å, I instead proposed the binomial name of animals in the Swedish fauna:

Saab Lynx (Saab 9-2)
Saab Vulpes (Saab 9-3)
Saab Gulo (Saab 9-4X)
Saab Lupus (Saab 9-5)
Saab Ursus (Saab 9-6X)
Saab Alces (Saab 9-7)
Saab Sonett (No need to change)

I especially like Saab Lynx, and Saab Ursus is also good, but there is already a Polish tractor called Ursus. I am very unsure about how the rest of the names sound like. I guess if I used more than five minutes I could have come up with better sounding names. :)

Saab driver saved by moose-proof roof

Berkeleyside reports that Jerry Holl of Berkeley escaped with no injury when a huge limb from an oak tree fell on his car:

Jerry Holl was backing his car up in front of his home on Spruce Street Tuesday evening when Wham!, a huge limb from an oak tree fell on his car. Luckily, Holl was not hurt and made his way out of the passenger door.

To quote one of the commenters to the story at Berkeleyside:

"His Saab's moose-proof roof supports saved him! It's no joke - car/moose collisions are a big problem in Sweden and Saab engineers it's windshield and roof to withstand them."

I prefer this kind of Oak on my Saab.

Saab lesson three: Don't use my Saab as a ramp!

Earlier we've read about people getting stuck in the sunroof of a Saab and a villain filling diesel in his "borrowed" petrol Saab. Today we have an old lady who backed her Renault - not into - but half ways over a Saab! BBC Norfolk has the details: 

An elderly driver was said to be shaken but unhurt after reversing her car over another vehicle in a freak accident in a Norfolk car park.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the Homebase store at Yaxham Road, Dereham at about 1530 BST on Friday.

The woman, in her 70s, is understood to have hit the accelerator while reversing her automatic Renault Megane.

The car mounted a Saab 9-5 SE parked directly behind.

Nobody was in the Saab at the time of the accident.

The Renault Megane has since been towed away.

Just how in h*** do you manage to back OVER another car?

Weekend's entertaining bits n pieces

Here's a weekend edition with some bits and pieces to keep you entertained.

Saab lesson two: Use correct fuel!

Yesterday we heard about a woman who decided to use the sunroof as a door and got stuck. Today the Billings Gazette can inform us that another Saaber, or maybe I should say a wanna-be Saaber, got a lesson about fuel - and that crime never pays:

Troopers with the Wyoming Highway Patrol arrested a Texas man Tuesday morning after they found him on the side of Interstate 25 in a stolen car that he had filled up with the wrong kind of fuel.

According to a news release from Sgt. Stephen Townsend, a trooper pulled in behind a Saab station wagon on I-25 about two miles north of Casper, Wyo, at about 8 a.m.

"Apparently, the driver of the vehicle, 22-year-old Christopher N. Briggs, had mistakenly put diesel fuel in the car instead of regular gasoline," Townsend wrote.

The Saab, which had Montana license plates, was taken at gunpoint from a motorist in Billings during a strong-armed robbery on March 20, the highway patrol said in the news release.

This might seem funny, but filling up with the wrong fuel actually happens many times daily even here in little Norway. And if you start and drive off with the wrong fuel, the workshop bill will get unpleasant. But I guess we can't feel sorry for this unlucky guy, but I applaud his choice of getaway vehicle! :)

Saab lesson one: Do not use the sunroof as a door!

WMUR New Hampshire today tells the story of a woman who got stuck in the sunroof of her Saab. Yes, you did read correctly, she got stuck in the sunroof!
Here's what WMUR can tell us:

Manchester firefighters were called to the Walgreen's parking lot at the corner of Varney and South Main streets at about 6:45 p.m. to find a woman stuck up to her waist in the sunroof.

She told firefighters her friend was locked out of the car and she was trying to get the keys.

Firefighters were able to open the car doors, but that armed the security system and locked the woman in place, firefighters said.

They used a portable airbag to squeeze the sunroof open and free the woman.

The report also tells us that the woman escaped (?) from the ordeal unharmed, but unfortunately it doesn't say if the Saab was equally lucky.
